So many of us remember and cherish special memories of the Country Store in our East Tennessee community. The Country Store embraced the heart of our community, where friends and neighbors gathered, shopped, and shared their news, hearing every sort of conversation and unintended gossip. Assorted goods were purchased from the Country Store that could not be grown or made at home, and every sort of mail was sent and received at the Country Post Office within its doors. Ice Cream at the Soda Fountain in the Country Store was always a special treat. It is said that “Through the doors of the Country Store passed the best people on earth, their customers”.

The Country Store could be described as a place of organized clutter, looking as if the stores plan was thoughtfully arranged. From floor to ceiling, goods ran parallel everywhere in the store, where every square inch of space was used and every nail head had something hanging from it. In the winter season, the pot belly stove provided warmth for those who gathered, and in the summer the door and window were open wide. Coffee, sodas, hot chocolate, ice cream, snacks and checkers were played, as good conversation gave the visitor a sense of passing the day away. And, who can forget as a kid, the memories of the jars of sweet bulk candy, when families shopped at the Country Store.
